Dr Alexandra Manta is a consultant ophthalmologist specialising in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery. She is also a clinical researcher committed to advancing the vision science through research and innovation. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), the Australian and New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons (ANZSOPS), and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom (RCOphth). She completed advanced fellowships in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery with internationally recognised leaders including Prof Timothy Sullivan in Brisbane, Miss Michele Beaconsfield at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and Prof Robert Goldberg at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles. Her time at UCLA strengthened her focus on clinical and translational research. She holds an academic title of Lecturer at the University of Queensland (UQ) and is a visiting researcher at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Dr Manta supports Queensland Eye Institute research on the pathophysiologic involvement of collagen in eyelid laxity disorders and investigating the effect of downregulation of IGF-1R expression in orbital fibroblasts derived from patients with thyroid eye disease through genome editing. She is also involved in several thyroid eye disease drug trials.
Dr Manta is active in education, running courses on subjects including oculoplastic and orbital dissection and cosmetic filler complications. She also conducts regular oculoplastic teaching and research focus group meetings for medical residents, principal house officers, and registrars at the Queensland Eye Institute. She has been published in peer-reviewed journals and authored chapters in medical textbooks.
Alexandra enjoys spending time with family and friends, and in her spare time she loves playing board games and reading. She is passionate about teaching and supporting junior doctors and feels proud to contribute to the next generation of eye specialists. Her approach to care is centred on kindness, careful attention to detail, and genuine respect for each patient’s individual needs.
