On Thursday 9th October, we join the global community in celebrating World Sight Day — highlighting the shared commitment to ensuring eye care is accessible, available, and affordable for all. The Queensland Eye Institute continues to pursue these aims through its advocacy program and advanced clinical services.
QEI is a founding member of the National Eye Research Network, which brings together Australia’s leading eye research institutes to address preventable blindness. This group of Australian eye health researchers is developing a multi-disciplinary approach to eye and vision research in Australia.
QEI partners with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) to convene a Global Eye Health Network, supporting professional development for eye health workers in smaller, low-resourced Pacific nations. The Network offers professional development, mentoring and training, which increases local capacity for diagnosis, treatment, and care.
Ukrainian refugee Viktor Olipor found safety and restored sight in Queensland thanks to Mater Refugee Complex Care Clinic (MRCCC) and cataract surgery by QEI’s Associate Professor Anthony Kwan. And QEI patient Dr Ray Hibbins shared is journey with macular degeneration, highlighting the need for everyone to know their family eye health history and to have regular eye checks.
Because early intervention and regular eye health is critical to personal and social wellbeing, on October 9th we encourage everyone to #LoveYourEyes
